Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox Series X will be free for Xbox One players, as announced by CD Projekt Red today (via Xbox Achievements).

This will be possible through Smart Delivery on the Xbox Series X. Microsoft has committed to the legacy of the Xbox with its jump into the next generation of gaming, and the latest connective tie “empowers you to buy a game once and know that… you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on.” So, if you buy Rainbow Six Quarantine for the Xbox One, you’d also qualify for the game’s Xbox Series X version, if Ubisoft signs on for Smart Delivery. It’s a nice thought, but it seems unlikely that companies would bow out of double dipping that gets them one purchase for the current generation and another purchase for the next generation. Plus, it’s a pretty established trend—just think of franchises like Call of Duty and FIFA.
Yet, CD Projekt Red affirmed that players who pick up Cyberpunk 2077 for the Xbox One will be eligible for the Xbox Series X version, free of charge. “Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades,” it justified. We don’t know if Sony will adopt a similar system for the PlayStation 5, but if it doesn’t, this is quite a steal for the Xbox community.
Cyberpunk 2077 will launch for the Xbox One on September 17, 2020, and for the Xbox Series X in the future.
